Whether it’s grilling with friends or lounging poolside, the best part of summer is getting to spend every free minute outside! But a relaxing afternoon outside can quickly be squashed by mosquitoes buzzing around your face. While you could always use bug spray, its sticky, smelly mixture makes it a less than ideal solution. So enjoy your backyard once again with these natural alternatives to bug spray.
Create a homemade citronella candle.
Citronella is one of the best bug and mosquito repellents available, so take advantage of it. And while you could always buy your own eco-friendly citronella candles, sometimes it’s more fun (and beautiful) to create your own — all you really need is citronella oil, your favorite scent, wax, and pre-waxed wicks.
Sprinkle a few drops of lavender.
While humans love the smell of lavender, mosquitoes hate it! Place a few drops of lavender throughout your backyard and near your patio area. You can even spray some around your windowsills and doorways to keep other unwanted pests out of your home.
Use plants strategically.
It’ll probably come as no surprise to you that citronella and lavender plants will also keep mosquitoes from buzzing around you, but there are a number of other plants that will also help keep them away, like:
- Basil
- Marigolds
- Catnip
- Lemon balm
- Pepermint
- Garlic
Repel them from the inside.
Believe it or not, some people have found that drinking apple cider vinegar has been effective in preventing mosquito bites. So the next time you’re relaxing outside, add a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar into your water.
