The holidays are times spent with friends and family, enjoying delicious food and exchanging gifts. Unfortunately, that holiday joy can quickly fade once January comes and you’re faced with the messy aftermath of hosting. If presents and pine needles are covering the living room floor and it feels like the whole house needs to be vacuumed, here are a few tips to revitalize your house in the new year.
Take Down the Decorations
Unfortunately, now that the holidays are over it’s time to say goodbye to the decorations. Keep your lights organized and ready for next year by wrapping them around a piece of cardboard or empty wrapping paper tube. And while it may be tempting to throw all your ornaments and household decorations into a few huge boxes, take some time to organize and label everything.
Return Unwanted Gifts
It’s the thought that counts, so while you can appreciate your friend’s and family’s effort, don’t feel like you have to keep gifts you don’t want. Put all your gifts in a bag and carve out one day where you go to the mall and return the things you don’t need. Better yet, donate them to a Goodwill store or your favorite charity.
Check for Stains
Move furniture around and check for any accidental scuff marks or fallen food. If you do find a stain, know what kind of furniture you have (stained wood, leather, suede, etc.) and get a cleaner that is designed specifically for that surface.
Tidy up the Guest Room
Now that you’ve just said goodbye to your final guest, strip the sheets and pillowcases and toss them in the washing machine, then wipe down the surfaces with an all-purpose cleaner. Check the drawers for any leftover clothes or jewelry. If something important was left behind let them know you have it and will mail it to them during the week.
Glass and Window Cleaning.
Between holiday guests and food prep, your glass tabletops are probably in need of a good scrubbing. Use your best glass cleaner (or make your own by mixing half a cup of vinegar with half a cup of warm water) to get rid of fingerprints and food.
