It’s a window, you can’t really mess up cleaning it, right? Well if you’re cleaning your windows once or twice a day, you’re probably not doing it right. We’re not exactly claiming it’s brain surgery, but cleaning glass can be trickier than you’d think. Below are the four most common glass cleaning mistakes and what you can do to avoid them.
Cleaning on a sunny day
While you may want to wait for a beautiful, sunny day to go out and wash your car, the sun will do more harm than good. Heat from the sun will cause soap to dry almost instantly, meaning you’ll be left with hard streaks running down your windows.
Not dusting the windowsill and frame
If you don’t dust or vacuum the area around the window, any water that drips will create a muddy, dusty mess.
You don’t use enough glass cleaner
Don’t be afraid to spray a generous amount of cleaner on your windows the next time you clean them. In an effort to conserve cleaning solution, people usually try to get away with using the bare minimum. While you might be saving a little bit of spray, you won’t really be disinfecting your glass and will probably end up with a streaky, dull finish.
You still dry with a newspaper
Oh the dreaded newspaper trick. Some people swear by this old wives tale, but we’ve never seen much success with it. Instead of grabbing the New York Times the next time you’re cleaning, reach for a microfiber cloth. Microfibers are machine washable, reusable and most importantly will leave your glass, shiny, and streak free.
